Britain Declares War - In 1939 Britain had declared war on Germany. By July 1940 Britain had found itself alone in this war after France and Germany had signed an armistice. During the summer and autumn of 1940 the Battle of Britain took place, followed by The Blitz (the bombing of Britain's cities, industrial centres and ports). The Blitz began on September 7th, 1940, with a heavy daylight raid on London, followed by a night raid. Daylight raids continued up to October 5th. Throughout the war, King George VI's role was to act as a figurehead, keeping up the morale of his armies and people. He made several morale boosting visits to his troops abroad during the war.
