By Michael Morpurgo

Paperback

In the unique landscape of the Camargue during WWII, a boy lives among the salt flats and the flamingos.

Lorenzo is difficult, and there are lots of things he doesn't understand, but he does understand animals- flamingos especially. He loves music, and routine, and riding the wooden horse on his friends carousel, over and over.

But then the soldiers come. everything is threatened: the carousel, Kezia, even Lorenzo's flamingos. Yet there are kind people, even among the soldiers, and there is always hope.

This is a book about fear of the other, its ultimate vision is one of optimism. Books such as this have never been more important.
