Description
Description
The Type 89 I-Go (Kō) was the first Japanese medium tank produced in large numbers and marked a significant step in the development of the Imperial Japanese Army’s armored forces.
Designed in the late 1920s, it combined foreign influences with domestic experience. The tank was armed with a short-barreled 57 mm gun intended mainly for infantry support, supplemented by machine guns. Its construction featured riveted armor of limited thickness and a conventional layout with the turret mounted centrally on the hull.
Type 89 Kō tanks saw extensive combat use in Manchuria and during operations in China throughout the 1930s. In the conditions of the Asian theater and against lightly equipped opponents, the tank proved reasonably effective, even though it soon lagged behind more modern designs in terms of protection and mobility. Nevertheless, the Type 89 Kō laid the groundwork for subsequent Japanese tank development and played a key role in the mechanization of the army.
