Description

By David Fletcher MBE & The Tank Museum

This book is the second of a multi-volume history of British tanks by renowned British armour expert David Fletcher MBE.

It covers the development and use of the Matilda, Valentine and Crusader tanks that pushed back the Axis in North Africa, the much-improved Churchill that fought with distinction from North Africa to Normandy, and the excellent Cromwell tank of 1944-45. It also takes a look at Britain's super-heavy tank projects, the TOG1 and TOG2, and the Tortoise heavy assault tank, designed to smash through the hardest battlefield conditions, but never put into production.

An awesome read

A great book for a broad history of British WWII tanks. David Fletcher's writing style is easy to understand and entertaining. There are some minor disappointments: two grammatical errors missed by proof reading (at the top of my head I can't remember what pages these were in but stood out immediately when reading). The chapter about the Valentine is a little disjointed (this is not written by Fletcher). I had to read it three times to get it in my head a development timeline of the tank. My preference would've been to have sequential Sections in timeline order for each upgrade or new model (with a heading highlighting each model). The tables do help to clarify though so this is a saving grace. The most annoying thing is a random paragraph at page 136 sandwiched between paragraphs about controls. It's written like a caption about the Bishop but I can't relate it to any images or previous text. Editing gone wrong, I suspect? Regardless it is a great book and a fantastic intro to the complexities of British WWII tank development. Highly recommended.

Very detailed and informative

This is a great read for someone who wants to know almost the minutiae of British tank development, lessons learned, sometimes the hard way. Many tanks are covered, I think the serious student of this subject will enjoy it, even some interesting facts for the casual enthusiast

A lot more than I thought

This well researched book explains not only what the tanks were, how they worked but also their development and the strategic thinking of the time. A thoroughly good read. Recommended for anyone interested in the subject.
