Description

Heavy Gun Tank.

The FV214 Conqueror heavy gun tank was developed and fielded by the British Army in the early years of the Cold War to counter the threat caused by Soviet heavy tanks such as the IS-3 and the T-10. If the Cold War had turned hot, the Conqueror would have served as a tank destroyer to knock out enemy armour at a range superior to that of the Centurion main battle tanks.

This publication describes the development history, the technology, variants and the only eight year long in-service life of the Conqueror heavy gun tank. Also covered is the Conqueror armoured recovery vehicle.

Excellent

Not one of the best known British tanks and only in limited service for a short time accurate information is difficult to come by. Fear Naught, this Tankgrad fills most of the gaps. Excellent annotated photos of all marks, details of deployment and tactical use, internal drawings from the User Manual and detailed technical details of gun, ammunition, engine etc. Highly recommended.

Generally excellent - superb photographs and technical details.

Page 47 (lower photo) purports to show a Conqueror of the 4th/7th Royal dragoons at Fallingbostel in 1955/56.
The turret, however, appears to be decorated with Chinese Eyes - indicating it belongs to the 4th Royal Tank Regiment who were also in Fallingbostel at that time. I was then a Sig/Gunner on a Conqueror in 4th RTR.
