Churchill Tank by David Fletcher

David Fletcher’s title on the Churchill tank has been republished with a 21st Century makeover.

This title was originally published by HMSO in 1983 but have been out of print for many years. The Tank Museum has republished the book as the next step in its programme to make David Fletcher’s early work available to modern standards at a fair price.

This title is primarily based around the Official War Office Handbooks, complete with detailed illustrations and technical drawings and covering every facet of the vehicle from engine, clutch, transmission, turret, ammunition and armament.

David supplements this book with vehicle histories, alongside additional documents and scale diagrams.

In The Churchill Tank, he details the troubled development of a tank which would become a stalwart of the Royal Armoured Corps and participate in some of the hardest fighting of the war.

Not quite what the title suggests, but very useful

The first 14 pages provide a brief into to the development of the Churchill. Suddenly on page 23 we get a reproduction of the Service Instruction book for the Churchill VII and VIII and that makes up the rest of the book. In parts it is very technical (inevitably), with instructions about lubrication, drawings of the transmission, wiring diagrams for the turret for example. There are excellent plans of these two Marks of tank and the chapter covering the ammo carried and used is particularly good. On balance I preferred the Haynes Manual.

Great title, very informative.

A great addition to the library of any one who loves military history and British tanks in particular, although this may be a bit too specific for the general reader. If you're a fan of the Churchill tank and it's derivatives this needs to be part of your collection. This title takes an in-depth look at the Churchill, including many photos and technical drawings.

A great little package

I think this is a beautifully produced little book, which I purchased along with the mini Haynes manual on the same tank. Both books will provide all the reference I need for some upcoming modelling projects. As usual with the Tank Museum the customer service was top notch.

All the details you could want

Well written, and the compilation of the “user manuals” place this book at the head of the class. If you are interested in the Churchill tank this book needs to be in your collection.
