Description

By Aubrey Smith

Originally published under a alias in 1922, this memoir of a private soldier in the London Rifle Brigade is based closely on the letters he sent home throughout the First World War, from enlistment and initial training in 1914, to the final Allied advance in the weeks leading up to the Armistice.

It records the experiences of an important but often unnoticed branch of the British Army, first in the trenches then in the transport section.

Excellent insite into the front line private throughout the progress of the war

The account of Aubrey Smith's passage through the horrors of trench warfare and subsequently as a transport soldier taking supplies to the front line is an excellent read. Despite the awful conditions he displays a humour throughout which endears you to him and helps you understand the point of view of the ordinary ranks.
Despite a lack in places of proof reading I commend this exceptional book to anyone with an interest in what it was like during the treacherous times on the Western Front.
