Liverpool, 1940. The country is at war.
Friends Joan McDonald and Monica Eustace were new brides when war broke out. Now their husbands are stationed hundreds of miles away on military training, and every letter home is a precious gift. Joan is shocked to realise that she's expecting a baby. Monica busies herself at work, boosting morale by cutting factory girls' hair, while at night she drives an ambulance ferrying locals injured in air raids to hospital.
Then comes devastating news. For the bereaved, the support of close family and friends brings comfort. Until their beloved Mersey View takes a direct attack...
No one will every forget the sacrifices that have been made. But Joan and Monica are determined to weather the storm, and, side by side, start to build a brighter future.
