Description

Military Trucks Archive: 02 Scammell Pioneer, Britain's First-Generation Tank Transporter

Dating back to the late 1920s, the Scammell Pioneer (TRMU20, TRMU30) was possibly Britain’s earliest heavy tractor. It was originally designed for use in the oilfields of the Middle East, but was soon adopted by the British Army as a tank transporter.

It was an enormously capable vehicle which, despite lacking front-wheel drive and possessed the ability to press-on almost regardless of the terrain. Sadly, unable to keep pace with increases in the weight of armoured fighting vehicles, it was rendered obsolete by the appearance of the American Diamond T, in 1942.

This new volume is packed with information and photographs covering the Scammell Pioneer (TRMU20, TRMU30), including: the story of the Pioneer’s early years; the development of the military Pioneer; Pioneers in military service, other Pioneers – artillery tractors and recovery vehicles; the post-war years – heavy haulage and fairground users; Pioneers in preservation.

The book contains more than 180 rare images and, together with the authoritative technical information provided, is sure to keep the most inquisitive enthusiast occupied for hours.

A fascinating book

A well researched and well written book, with many interesting photographs. The history extends to the later civilian use of the vehicles, which is also fascinating. The writer does not shy away from the vehicle's shortcomings. The book is a high quality product, which is well bound, and will easily survive years of use.
