Former submariner and historian Peter Goodwin gives HMS Alliance the Haynes Manual treatment, examining in detail her construction and restoration,

Launched in 1945 and commissioned two years later, submarine HMS Alliance was built for service with the Royal Navy in the Far East. Alliance had a long and distinguished career of more than 28 years that took her all over the world. Today, Alliance is the centrepiece at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport, where the submarine experience is brought to life by tours around the boat.

A Nice reminder

One reason for purchasing this book was to remind me of the fact that we took my grandfather (Pop) down to the sumbmarine museum in Gosport to show hime this boat - a more modern submarine than those he served in during and after the first World War. Pop loved it but thought it very modern! I reminded him that it was launched in the same year I was born and that more modern boats such as Polaris, with which I was familiar, were themselves becoming obsolecent.
Pop learnt his trade on a 'Holland' boat and went on to serve as a 'Fore-endsman' (torpedo man) in HMSm E45 (a minelayer) through to 1919 and later on HMSm M-1 until 1925.
This as a wonderful volume and lives up to the best tradition of Haynes. I can highly recommend it.

The delivery was easy to arrange and arrived on time via post. The book was in excellent condition. I would purchase from the Tank Museum in the future.

Visited the Submarine Museum

I really like these manuals and was particularly interested in this one as I had previously visited the Royal Dockyard, Portsmouth and had seen the sub. Buying it and reading prior your visit would be a bonus and certainly add to the experience. As I tend to dip in and out of the manual I have read all the sections. It also supplements the U boat manual. Pity these books don't come with a scratch and sniff card so you could experience how foul the inside of a sub is after or during a voyage.
